On behalf of the Dunedin Otaru Sister City Society, I would like to welcome you to this web page, which is the latest link between the two cities. Our Society was established in 1987, and provides a forum and a focus for the many cultural activities and other interactions between the two cities. These include educational exchanges, cultural activities, and generally creating an increased awareness and understanding of Japan's culture, traditions and language.

I would welcome any enquires on behalf of the Society and these can be made to me as follows:

My involvement with our sister city relationship is now rather long. I have welcomed many visitors from Dunedin. I have also visited Dunedin as a member of Otaru Civic Delegations, along with other citizens and business people of Otaru, a number of times.

Dunedin and Otaru are similar, as they are both historic port cities. This similarity as well as the very warm welcome I receive from my friends in Dunedin. The current and previous Mayors, Mr. Russell Duff (Chairman of Sister City Committee) to name a few, make me feel like I've come home whenever I visit Dunedin.

The most unforgettable person for me is the late Mr. David Henderson, president of Otago Chamber of Commerce and Industry. In 1984, when Otaru City held the '84 Otaru Expo, Mr. Henderson worked very hard to build the Dunedin Pavilion. He also invited the Dunedin Brass Band to perform at this auspicious occasion, which contributed to the Expo's lively and colorful atmosphere. Through his hard work, the sister city links were made firm. When I visit Dunedin I always visit the seaside cemetery where he rests peacefully and I like to take the time to pray and think of Mr. Henderson.

I wish from the bottom of my heart that Dunedin and Otaru prosper together and established sister city links in various spheres, especially business links will be more active in the future.
